What's New

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 20, 2008, 10:03 PM
Having some Budget/financial issues so the BOA project probable wont be moving very fast until the money is steady. Plus I maybe relocating back the ontario which may delay things. I need to get a P.O. Box where you can send the contract and a P.O. Box is not expensive ($45 for 3 months) but kinda silly to get the P.O. Box in British Columbia then end up moving to Ontario.

I'm currently sending demo reels and portfolios to studios. If you know of one hiring let me know if you wish.

My sister had a baby on Father's Day. A girl named Claire.

BOA

Journal Entry: Fri May 9, 2008, 11:22 PM
Update June 1 2008
Working on:
-Getting a P.O. Box address so I can post the contract online with an mailing address
- Some editting to the contract and pricelist (which you haven't seen yet, I don't want to post them till they're done)
-The BOA website
- Getting some framing samples for you to see. There's black, cherry, walnut and white solid wood frames.

I made an online portfolio [link] Freeweb will allow you to sell up to 5 items at a time for free and it's easy to set up so I recommend using it. If you pay $20 you can register a domain name, for a few dollar per month you can purchase more space/bandwidth and room for more sale items.

Update May 20/08
Opened a seperate email for BOA
the_book_of_art@yahoo.com
email enquiries there.
I working on some stuff right now so be patient. I'll post the contract publically then send you all the link once it's ready.

Important Update
I said I would send out contracts on May 12th but Iam working on some new business deals that may delay the contract. I'll try to put a sample up publicly so you can critique it, make suggestions but sign it cause I may have to add stuff to it.
reason for delay are:
-I want to add a Non-profit section where you may choose to donate an image where 100% of profit from that images goes to an art related charity such as [link] but I'd have to talk to the charity first to make sure their okay with. That would give you the opportunity to be charitable without sending money. Kinda what `ArtistsForCharity does except in a book.
-Have some meeting and seminars to look into
-Also wanna do a market analysis and survey so I'll have to so I'll have to show people your art. Not selling your art (not till I have proper permission) just gathering opinions to see where you art will sell.

Update May 7/08
The nice man from the BC government says the BC art council [link] doesn't provide grants for project such as the BOA.
If you google "your location" art council you'll probable find your own local art councils website they usually give out grants and scholarship which you can apply for. Try looking at you cities, province/state and even your federal art council. I emailed The Canadian Art Council and got a polite reply back the next day. They give out grants to books that are a 10,000 word minimum, contain Canadian art aswell as some other restriction like what publishers that can be used etc. The BOA is more image then text so I wouldn't think we'd hit 10,000, and I'm pretty sure the majority of us is from the U.S. not Canada. We have a few canadian, artists from United Kingdom, Brazil, Austrailia, Phillipines, Indonesia, Uruguay, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Bosnia, Singapore, Georgia, New Zealand, Singapore, Italy, Greece. We don't classify as Canadian content but that okay, we're international that's cool.
end update

Update May 9/08
I contacted `anthonyasael coordinator of of Artist in all of Us [link] and he's agreed to being the charity for the Non-profit section of the BOA.
End Update

There shall be 4 sections in the BOA

Open Print Section:
I'll select 100 images by several artists to be featured in this section.
Inorder to be part of this section you will need to provide me with high resolution files so that I can create.
Artists to be included in this section as long as they don't change their mind:

Limited Edition Section:
I'll select up to 20 images by a few artists to be featured in this section.
Each artists is responsible for printing, signing and numbering their own limited editions.
Inorder to be part of this section you must prove your credibility by providing reference.
You will tell me a price for your limited and I'll add up to 50% on to that as a fee. For example if you say $100 for your limited then I'll add up to $50 to the price for my fee.
When a customer orders your limited, I paypal you the money plus shipping and you send the limited to the customer.
:icontmaric: :iconkorean-neighbour:

Commission Section:
I'll select up to 10 artists for the commission section.
You get a two page spread which features your rates and samples.
Again you must prove credibility with references.
And again you tell me a price, I add 50% to the price, that's my payment for finding the customer.
I'll contact you when commissions are found.
:iconelftantra:

Business Card Section:
This is the only section of the book where your contact information can be show and it is the only section of the book that isn't free for you to publish but it's still cheap. It's $10 to get your business card into the BOA.
The business card would be printed at 3.5 x 2.5 inches (regular business card size) and you design your own business card so you choose the content. I just ask that you do not advertise hate or criminal activity, do not use work within your business card that is not copyright to you and be logical with how you design your business card, porn and profanity does not make you look professional and I will not print it withing the BOA.

BOA revised

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 11, 2008, 2:11 PM
Read the information below and if you are interested show me an art you'd like to contribute to the project.

Perhaps you remember, perhaps not but back in last Summer I was working on The Book Of Art, which was a book designed to be a free advertising space for artists.
[link] [link]
It had some small success but nothing large because I didn't have the budget to do anything large. I was over generous.

I have reevaluated my plans for the BOA and based on my work at the gallery and meetings with artists and agents. I'd like to revise the BOA into a complete catalogue, where customers may browse through the catalogue and order prints of any artwork they see withing that interests them. They'll be able to order the artwork as giclee (highest quality printing process available) or as a cheaper print.
The profit from the prints will be divided into thirds, 2 thirds to artist, 1 third to me. So if the artist makes $20 I make $10.
When the customer purchases a single print the artists profit would be between $10-$50 per print depending on the size and quality of the print sold (you get more for giclee sales cause the giclees have 100-200 year lightfastness rating, which is how long they should last under normal conditions so the customer should pay extra for the extra quality).
For bulk purchases (when the customer buys 10, 25, 50 or 100 prints) you get between $3-$30 per print.
Once I have have all the math worked out I'll post a complete price list detailing how much you get for what print.

This time in the BOA your contact info wont be included unless the artists purchases advertising space. I have to be reembursed for finding the buyer so it's not really fair if the buyer and artist can go behind my back and settle the deal themselves. If I find someone who wants an original or commission from you I'll let you know myself.

If you want to be pay of the BOA you don't have to create new artwork you can use artwork you've perviously as long as you have high res files and you own 100% of the copyright (Note: you'll still own the copyright when you put your art in the BOA, your just giving me permission to use the art for the BOA via contract).
Just show me any artwork you'd like to contribute (there's no minimum or maximum to how many pieces of artwork you'd like to use.)along with an email address and if I am interested I'll ask you to read the contract. If you agree with the contract you sign it, send it to me, I sign it, send it to you, you don't have to give me your high res files until you get a contract with my signature on it.

Projects Vote

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 27, 2008, 2:38 PM
It is my ambition to combine art with charity, to help others while helping myself. To help the starving artist stop starving without starving myself.
My artistic mind has thought up a bunch of projects, too many projects to do at once but I'll start listing them here. If you see one you're interested in you can talk to me about it though it may be a while before that project is fully started.

Read through the projects and let me know which ones you'd be interested in.

#1 Adopt-a-Family conclusion
The Adopt a Family and Help and Win [link] from Christmas wasn't really concluded properly, to make up for that anyone who participated in those can get a treat. Note me to find out what your treat is. Also I have the receipt from our $100 donation to the Salvation Army, if you wanna see that I can show you a scan via email.

#2 B.O.A. Revise
The B.O.A [link] had some small success but nothing big because of the following reason:
I was overgenerous and gave away advertising in the B.O.A. for free which left no budget to do anything big with. So this time there will be $25 processing fee to get into the BOA to pay for publishing and distribution. As well as several other major revisions made inorder to generate interest in the book.

#3 Photomanipulaton Commissions
I would like to sell photomanipulation prints and commissions, however when I do a photomanipulation, unless I've taken all the photos then it doesn't completely belong to me. I'd like to do photomanipulation where the photographers get a cut.
I made a forum about it here [link]

#4 Charity Cd-rom
You donate photos or art to go on a cd-rom, the cd-rom gets sold for $5-$10 each, money goes to Art in all of us [link]
So that gives you a way to donate without spending money

#5 Giclee ACEO Sales
I put this journal up about High Quality Printing [link] Their rather expensive but great if you're doing limited editions. I was trying to think about how I can make this more affordable and ~Pannya gave me an idea. ACEOs are popular right now. ACEOs are 3.5x2.5 inches so about 16 ACEO can fit onto a 11x14 giclee on canvas print. So it costs about $2 per ACEO Giclee print. So then I could offer my artwork as ACEO giclee on canvas prints for about $5 each. But then, I'm I really going to be able to get 16 orders. So how about getting othe artists involved. Which means you'd take orders for your artwork as ACEOs, they pay about $5. $2 is for printing so you make $3 off of each sale.

#6 Trade Up
Inspired by *Almalphia, I'd like to expand on her trade up idea and create some kind of club/bartering system so when you need something instead of spending $$$ you can just trade for. So some kind of system where everyone lists what they need and what you want to get rid of and then you just find a way to trade what you want to get rid of for what you need. You know the saying "One mans treasure is another mans trash"

High Quality Printing

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 22, 2008, 11:59 PM
If you need some help getting some high quality prints, epecially for limited edition or gallery submitions, read through this journal and feel free to ask questions cause it is a bit complicated.
I sent a note to several deviants telling the about tis info. If you got one don't be annoyed. It just means I admire you as an artist and I'd like to help you further you art career The gallery gives me access to some resources and info, I'll share them with you when I can, if don't want me sharing it with you just let me know and I'll let you alone.
Edit: scroll to the bottom, if your not interested in the prints, for info I just found on gallery catalogue submitions.

The Gallery I work at does high quality printing and starting next week I'm going to help make the prints. I'll do 20 hours per week at the workshop where the prints and frames are made and 8-16 hours at the gallery selling.

The prints are giclee [link] on canvas or art paper. The ink colour fade rating of 200 year the canvas and art paper has a colour fade rating of 75-100 year. That is approximately how long it will take for the material to show noticable fding (under normal conditions).
They're great if you need to do Limited Editions of want to submit a print to a gallery.
If you need some I can help you get some, however you'll have to buy at least 10 otherwise the postage eats up any of your savings (the cost of shipping 10 prints isn't much different then shipping 1) plus you get a discount if your buying 10 or more of the same image (which is what you'd be doing if you're doing a limited edition run). If you want 10 prints of 10 different images it costs more cause you lose the discount. If you can't afford 10 print you could find an artist that lives near you a split it with them (you get 5 prints, they get 5 prints), however the 10 prints will all be shipped o the same address.

The prices will be listed as follows:
Image Size= Price of first 10 + cost of additional prints after 10
12x16 = $350 +$28
That means you pay $350 for the first 10 prints (that's $35 per print) and then $28 for ever print afterwards. So if you wanted 15 prints it's be $350 + $28x5 = $490 for 15 prints
These prices should cover shipping to most places but you'll have to note or email me (ingridglaw@msn.com) and give me your postal code or approximate area so I can check postage, it could be a bit more or less. These are just estimated costs.
You'll also have to give me written permission to print your copyrighted work. I'll also make up a contract and sign it for you since this can be quite a big investment.

Tip of the week:

Okay, so art galleries can actually purchase their prints from catalogues. And you can actually submit your art to these catalogues. If your art is except they put in in the catalogue, the catalogue goes to the gallery, when a print is purchased you recieve a percentage of profite.
Though take note that these catalogues deal with very high quality artwork, if you don't get in don't feel bad you're competing against master artists. But if you do get in then I am proud of you.

The catalogues are:
